Lost Property  Following our February meeting, when Brian Lewis talked about  Norton School and the Foundation, Brian found that he was missing a 1971 A5 brochure for the school, which has some photos he hasn’t seen anywhere else. If you, or anyone you know, have borrowed or otherwise found the brochure please let me know ashley@pasgas.plus.com or (01926) 640545 or return it anonymously to 3 Green Farm End, Kineton, Warwick CV35 0LD

Warwickshire and the Normans  Having enjoyed David Freke’s illuminating talk about the many things that can learned from the Kineton Churchyard Survey at our April meeting, why not join him again next Tuesday, 6 May 2014 to learn more about Warwickshire and the Normans ?  (more details on the flyer below).

Sunday 13th July 2014 For the last four years the Warmington Heritage Group has held an open day at the National Herb Centre as part of the National Festival of British Archaeology. Each year this event, which is free to local history and archaeology groups in south Warwickshire/north Oxfordshire and to the public, appears to get bigger and better and is very well attended. For the next open day, on Sunday 13th July, K&DLHG will be taking a display stand. If you can spare us an hour or more on that Sunday to help man the stand, please let me know.

With best wishes

Before then the Pillertons are holding an event ‘Pillerton at War’ in Pillerton Priors Village Hall on Sunday 18 May 2014 at 7.00pm in aid of the Pillerton War Memorial Appeal.  Full details in the flyer in separate News article.

Help. One of the speakers/ organisers, James Kerr (email jk@jameskerr.co.uk) , has also asked for our help: “I am looking for a photograph of Henry Valentine Mills, the local squire in Pillerton  who was killed in 1917 and lived in the Manor – just wondered if you might have one, apparently he sat on the bench of the magistrates court in Kineton before the war.”

The Warwickshire Library and Information Service is also organising a First World War Project (see second flyer below)

Warwickshire Library and Information Service

First World War Project

A new project is being launched at Rugby, Leamington and Nuneaton libraries to gather photographs of Warwickshire people who lived through the First World War.

The project will collect information about local people who fought in the War or those who stayed at home to commemorate the centenary. The photographs and biographical information will be put into a booklet available to borrow from libraries and displays will be exhibited in September.

Anyone who has photographs of a Warwickshire relation is asked to contact the relevant library to book an appointment with a library volunteer to get their material scanned. Scanning days are available at Rugby, Leamington and Nuneaton on;

                                 Wednesday 14th May 2014

                             Saturday 6th June 2014

Unfortunately, unless an appointment is made beforehand it will not be possible to scan material on the day, however, more sessions may be available at a later date.

May

June

Louise Essex, Senior Librarian, Local Studies says, “We are expecting lots of people to come forward with fascinating stories to tell about their relations. We are interested in those who fought and also those who stayed behind; the men in protected industries and the women who looked after their families or those who worked on the land or in factories.

For more information please e-mail; librarylocalstudies@warwickshire.gov.uk or speak to a member of staff at one of the three libraries.

Next Meeting. Please remember that our next meeting is on Friday 25 April 2014 (the fourth Friday of the month) beginning at 7.30pm.  Change of Programme. The speaker and topic for the evening will not be as printed on your programme card.  Angela Allison is no longer able to join us.  Instead, David Freke will be giving an illustrated talk “In Loving Memory: Kineton Churchyard survey results.”  If you feel there is little to learn about churchyards and their  memorials, think again!  Gill and I heard David give a similar talk to a local history symposium last year and were amazed by the variety of detail that can be discovered within a local churchyard; both academics and the local historians showed great interest in what David had told them.  Come and share that experience.

Outings 2014 Isobel Gill has arranged three outings for the summer months:

Friday 20 June 2014             Evening visit to Southam.

Friday 18 July 2014              Evening visit to Cropredy

Saturday 9 August 2014        Day coach outing to Acton Scott Historic Working Farm

Further details will be available at the April meeting, when tickets will go on sale.

May Meeting. On Friday 16 May 2014 Dr Gillian White will be telling us about “The Great Fire of Warwick 1694”

WELCOME TO THE FIRST e-NEWSLETTER OF 2014

As some of you know we have been piloting the BALH electronic Newsletter for the past year.  When it started it was available to members who subscribed via our website, but after the good feedback we received we took the decision to make it part of your BALH membership package.  Unfortunately, through lack of email addresses, some of you will be unaware of the Newsletter so an especially warm welcome to those who are receiving it for the first time.

The Newsletter was started as a way for us to keep in touch with our many members, both society and individual, but especially society members who may not see regular copies of The Local Historian and Local History News.  The Newsletter is an extra to our two regular publicatons, working beside Local History News we try not to duplicate items, and you will receive it four times a year between publication of TLH and LHN.   Societies – please note that one copy of the Newsletter will be sent out to each society which we ask you to kindly forward onto your members.  If you would prefer we used a different email address please let me know.

The Newsletter is a forum for members, and we invite you to send in contributions on any aspect of local history, including participating in and reporting on regional news, starting debates on issues affecting your region and/or all regions of the UK, sharing your research methods to encourage other members to start or continue their research, asking queries of the membership, writing news of history in your locality,  explaining to others how your society mixes with the local population, the list can be endless ..   This is a great medium to keep in touch with other members on a regular basis.  Please send contributions to the email address below.

In this Newsletter we have a request for information on first floor chapels from Leamington History Group, an interesting article on protecting a medieval church building from Colmworth and Neighbours History Society, and an article on bringing history to life in North Kent graveyards from Kent Archaeology Society.  The Tools & Trades History Society have written to invite new members to join them, and we have some interesting news on what societies have been up to in Cornwall.  Also included this time is archives news, recommended resources, and a list of BALH publications/articles which are useful for World War One research.  Do also look at the Volunteering Opportunties as BALH are looking for people to help man stalls at fairs and history events, and there’s a new project by The Council for British Archaeology regarding the mapping of remains of First World War Britain.  For those of you who knew Joan Thirsk or were aware of her work we are pleased to bring you Adrienne Rosen’s account of Joan’s memorial service.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue of the BALH electronic Newsletter.  We look forward to hearing your views and comments, and especially to receiving your contributions.

Request by Martin Kenny 24 March 2014

This message was received on the K&DLHG website this morning (Monday 24 March).  If you feel you can help Martin Kenny with information of any sort, please get in touch with him direct.

As a hobby I write a few articles for the Warwickshire Focus on local personalities. I am currently researching Anthony Heniker Gotley who played in the first British Lions rugby tour and played a few times for England. According to records he was born in Tysoe and he father was a local vicar.

On Saturday afternoon I called into St Mary’s Church at Tysoe but there is no record of him there. After tea and chocolate brownies in the village cafe I noticed a building next door that clearly used to be a church with a psalm engraved on the wall and wondered if this would have been Reverend Henniker Gotley’s church?

Of course he could have been the vicar of a neighbouring parish – any ideas you could provide would be most appreciated.

 Best Regards

AGM and Supper.  Our 26th AGM and Supper will be held later this week, on Friday 21 March.  If you have already booked, please remember that the proceedings start at 7.00pm.  If you have not booked and would now like to join us for the Supper (price £11-50), please get in touch with Gill (01926-640545 or ashley@pasgas.plus.com)  by Tuesday evening at the latest.

Animal, Vegetable or Mineral?  As part of the relaxation after the Supper, those attending are invited to each bring a ‘mystery object’ (whose identity is known to the bringer) for the rest of the company to identify/guess.  The idea is not be for objects to be valued or identified if the owners themselves don’t know what they are.  The more of you willing to bring an object, the more fun we can have to round off the evening.

April Meeting.  On Friday 25 April 2014 Angela Allison will be talking to us about ‘The Early Black Presence in Warwickshire’

Request by Robert Cowley 28 January 2014

My name is Robert Cowley, the eldest son of Lilian and Robert James Cowley, formerly of Dene Close,Kineton.
I was brought up from birth at 3 Bridge Street, and one very interesting memory I have, is the full military funeral of Admiral Sir Walter Cowan in 1956, who is buried in Southam Road cemetery. I was 7 years old at the time, and remember how exciting it was to look out of that little cottage window to see a gun carriage, followed by all those military personnel going up to the cemetery.
My mother used to clean house for the admiral and this has been a memory I have held all these years.
Unfortunately, having tried on numerous occasions, have never been able to find any reports or newspaper cuttings of the event.
We then moved from Bridge Street to Dene Close, and my second memory is, of the horrific V bomber crash at Combroke. I remember the explosion lighting up the night sky to resemble daylight, and my late uncle, Cyril Cowley, peddling furiously up Dene Close, to reach the Fire Station, he was a retained fireman at the time, and was for a long time afterwards. Again, frustratingly, I am unable to find reports or newspaper cuttings for this incident either.
I hope you do not mind me sharing these two memories with you, as they have certainly stayed with me all this time.
Kind Regards, Robert

Warwick Market Hall Museum

Below is an exciting message about Warwick’s Market Hall Museum.  During tomorrow evening’s meeting (17 January 2014) KLHG chairman, David Freke, will be encouraging members to cast their individual votes in favour of this project.  Whether or not you will be there, please give careful consideration to helping the Museum in this way.

Peter A-S, K&DLHG secretary

I am really excited to announce that Heritage and Culture Warwickshire have been short-listed to win a top artist for a Museums at Night event to be held in May 2014. As a result a public vote will soon get underway which could put Warwick’s Market Hall Museum on the cultural map.

Our event proposal is to transform the town on the evening of May 16th into a ‘trading museum’ with more than 50 market stalls set up in Warwick’s Market Square. The stalls will be curated by local people and groups from across Warwickshire, invited by Heritage and Culture Warwickshire. Each community group will curate their own stall, displaying what defines them and what they value as an organisation and as part of our county.

The proposal has been shortlisted by internationally renowned artist Alex Hartley, made famous by his work with Cultural Olympiad for projects included in the 2012 Olympic Games. Alex would use the event to create a Warwickshire ‘cabinet of curiosity’ in the Market Hall Museum, taking elements from the stalls that inspire him to tell the story of Warwickshire. This is a great opportunity to highlight groups and the work they do as part of a high profile event.

Voting will get underway next week on Tuesday 14th January at 11am for two weeks. We are competing against three other proposed projects in Edinburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Burnley.

Only one town can win and the Market Hall Museum hopes to have the support of our colleagues and the local community in our campaign so please put it in your diaries and VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

Here’s how you can help…

The public vote will be open between 11am on Tuesday 14 January, and 5pm on Tuesday 28 January 2014.

To register your vote simply follow the link;

www.culture24.org.uk/places-to-go/museums-at-night/art462286-Connect10-Vote-Alex-Hartley

We would really appreciate your vote and support. If you are able to pass this link and email onto relevant contacts and members of your group that would be fantastic.
